An Ode to my Trapezius
Poor Trapezius you get such a hard time.. being blamed for neck pain, I know it often isn’t you – it’s that tiny Splenius Capitis. Trapzieus you are the muscle that will lift my shoulder blade to help me keep my handbag on my shoulder, or my phone between my ear – yes I know.. I must stop doing that.
You are the most massaged muscle in the human body! What a job you have!
Trapezius you are so amazing with your 3 different parts that all do different things. (How cool is that?)
Trapezius you are a fantastic stabilizer, helping my shoulder blades to sit on my ribs, and bring them close to my spine – without winging out. I will think about you when I sit letting you keep me upright and strong. I need you to make my push ups look stable, and I love you.
The Trapezius has an upper, middle and lower portion. The Upper portion is the part we grip onto when we have a “sore shoulder”. The middle part can often be locked long or short and is weak. When this part of our back is weak soo many other muscles have to help it out, we don’t stand up as straight as we should, or if we do stand straight we maybe overload the hips or legs to get us there.
Pilates loves to target the muscles that we use the least. Strengthening in small, subtle movements that overtime start to feel really powerful, leads us to those desired bigger moves - like push ups, or just being able to sit at your desk for a few hours without getting sore.
